Thomas Peter Hyer, 68, presently of Benton, Pennsylvania, formerly of Hazlet, New Jersey, passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania.  Thomas was born on January 12, 1949 in Long Branch, New Jersey and grew up in Holmdel, New Jersey, where he also raised is daughter, Katherine.  Later in life, Thomas settled in Hazlet, New Jersey.

Thomas was an extremely kind, generous, and giving man.  He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, and spent countless hours volunteering throughout his community and neighboring towns.  He cared greatly about his community, which was displayed in the various volunteer endeavors he was involved in over the years and the positions he held throughout his lifetime in his careers.  Thomas began his career as a custodian for St. John Vianney High School, working side by side with his late father, Harvey William Hyer.  After dedicating many years to St. John Vianney High School, he later began working for the Marlboro Board of Education from which he was currently retired.  Thomas was also extremely devoted to his second career, Hazlet Fire Company No. 1, and over the span of his career he held various titles with them, as well as with the Monmouth County Firemen's Association.  He was also very active with the Middlesex County Firemen's Training Center, and took great pride in teaching about Fire Prevention to the children in the Hazlet and Marlboro School Districts.  For the last several years, Thomas acted as a delegate during the New Jersey State Firemen's Convention, which he always looked forward to with the utmost excitement.  The convention is always held in Wildwood, New Jersey, and besides his excitement for attending and participating in the scheduled program, he mostly enjoyed spending priceless time with his grandchildren on the Wildwood boardwalk, where they would play games and go on as many rides as the day would allow.  Thomas loved his grandchildren, his daughter, and his family with all of heart, and he will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

He was predeceased by his parents, Mae (Higgins) and Harvey William Hyer.  Thomas is survived by his loving daughter, Katherine Kinsey and her husband, Shane, of Benton, Pennsylvania, his dear brother, Harvey Daniel Hyer and his wife, Barbara, and his cherished grandchildren, Morgan, Joshua, Thomas, and Gabriella Kinsey.  He is also survived by his adoring niece and nephew, Michele Guenther and her husband, Ed, and Michael Hyer, along with his very special great nieces and nephews who fondly knew him as "Uncle Tommy", Emily, Abigail, and Collin Guenther, Erin and Sean Hyer.
