Evangelos “Evan” Papamarkou, 83, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Mandraki, Nisyros, Greece, to George and Maria, he grew up alongside his brother Antonis between the islands of Nisyros, Kos and Rhodes. As a young man, he joined the Greek Merchant Marine and spent more than a decade sailing around the world delivering goods to ports from Asia to Africa to South America. In 1967, he met the love of his life, Katherine, at a local corner store in Keyport. They married that December and began their family in the following years. They settled in their forever home in Hazlet in 1972. He spent more than 35 years as a cook and chef at the Red Oak Diner, where he honed his cooking skills. He spent the remainder of his life cooking his delicious food for family/friends and entertaining with his impressive dancing and singing skills. He was an avid sports fan cheering for the New Jersey Devils, Rutgers Scarlet Knights and loved professional tennis, especially the Greek players.
As a loving and very proud father of three daughters, he encouraged the pursuit of higher education, especially close to home. A proud Rutgers parent, all three of his daughters, son in law and grandson graduated with degrees from Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Katherine, along with his daughters, Mary, Anthie (Brian) and Evangelia. His grandchildren, Athena and Patrick (Madelyn) and great-granddaughter, Rebecca. His sister-in-law, Kalliope and niece, Georgia in Greece. His furry son, Aristotle and furry daughter, Aphrodite. Along with many many cousins and friends across the US, Greece, Australia and Canada.
