Catherine McDermott, 89, of Hazlet, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of her family on Monday, September 9, 2024. She was born Catherine Klyberg on May 11, 1935, in Manhattan, New York. Catherine grew up in the Hell’s Kitchen section of New York City, where she met the man of her dreams, her beloved husband, John. Catherine and John were married on February 27, 1954, and started their life and family together in Hell’s Kitchen. They moved to Brooklyn for a short time before settling in Hazlet, New Jersey, where they remained to raise their family. Before her retirement, Catherine worked in the billing department at Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel for 20 years. She also worked as a fragrance tester for IFF well into her seventies. Catherine loved working at IFF and made countless lasting friendships there over the years.
Catherine had a wonderful sense of humor and was often the life of the party. She loved Atlantic City, Bingo, and dining out -especially at Houlihan’s in Holmdel where she was treated like royalty. She loved a good book, a great movie and all things Broadway, where her years as an usherette nurtured her love of song and dance and provided many wonderful memories. She loved having long talks and lots of laughs on the phone with her 6 sisters, with whom she shared an unbreakable bond. Most of all, Catherine adored her family and cherished spending time with them, most especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who always brought joy to her heart and smile to her face. Catherine was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend to many. She will be greatly missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
Catherine was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Dorothy (Reddy) Klyberg, her beloved husband, John McDermott, her siblings, Kenneth Klyberg, James Klyberg, and Dorothy Speirs, and her grandson, Richard Berges. She is survived by her loving children, Karen Varno and her husband, Bob, of Belford, John McDermott and his wife, Tammy, of Howell, Michael McDermott and his wife, Sandy, of Middletown, Maureen Miller of Hazlet, Joseph McDermott of Parlin, and Ann Marie Palochko and her husband, Joe, of Hazlet, and her dear siblings, Joan Vento, Maryann Crorkin, Carolyn Lyons, Eileen Petrovich, and Maureen Sexton. Catherine also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Jennifer Havens and her husband, Paul, Christine Joslin and her husband, Jay, Bobby Varno and his wife, Tracy, Kevin Varno, Meghan Varno, Lori Kirschbaum, Valerie McDermott, Thomas McDermott and his wife, Lindsay, Kelley Donovan and her husband, Eric, Robert Miller, Katelyn Amundson and her husband, Bob, Samantha Brandow and her husband, Mike, Makayla Wheeler and her husband, Joe, and Tara Anthes and her husband, Chris, along with 25 treasured great grandchildren who fondly called her “Nanny-Kate”, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
