Shirley Hellriegel Smith was born in Newark, NJ to parents Marie (Reinhardt) Hellriegel and Harry C. Hellriegel, Sr. She attended Cleveland Jr. High School and South Side High School. Shirley retired from both Bristol Myers Squibb and Schering-Plough (Merck). She was an extrovert who loved socializing, music and dancing. She was loved by all who knew her. Shirley resided in Laurence Harbor, NJ where she lived a happy and fulfilling life.
She was predeceased by her parents Marie and Harry, her brothers George Hellriegel, Harry C. Hellriegel, Jr. and William F. Steele, her husband Lewis C. Smith, and her daughter Carolyn Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Smith and by her son, Kevin L. Smith.
Left to mourn are her granddaughters, La’quadia Carswell, Deedra Harris, Tangii Mason, Terri Fine and Valerie Nicole Smith. She also leaves her beloved sisters-in-law, Lillie M. Canty and Brenda Smith, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Shirley’s children are honoring their mother’s stipulation to forgo services and burial.
