Robert J. O’Neill Sr., 86 of Holmdel, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday evening, August 17, 2022. Robert was born on June 13, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, where he grew up and met the love of his life, his wife, Joanne (Paladino) O’Neill. Robert and Joanne were married on April 19, 1958, in Brooklyn, where they remained to raise their family. In 1998, they retired to Holmdel, New Jersey. They also had a home in St. Lucie West, Florida. After retirement, they split their time equally between Holmdel and Florida.
As a first generation American, Robert lived a very full and beautiful life. He was a graduate of Power Memorial Academy High School in New York, New York, an alma mater he was very proud of. After completing his education, Robert began working for Goldman Sachs. He retired after 37 years of dedicated service to the company as Senior Vice President Bond Trader. In his younger years, Robert was a champion Irish step-dancer. He was also an excellent baseball player and tried out for a few major league baseball teams including the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. Most of all, Robert was a beloved and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather, who adored his family. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joanne (Paladino) O’Neill, his parents, Stephen and Elizabeth (Murphy) O’Neill, and his dear brother, Stevie O’Neill. Robert is survived by his loving children, Robert J. O’Neill Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Staten Island, NY, Kevin F. O’Neill and his husband, Johnson, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Thomas W. O’Neill of Holmdel, Alyce Sutherland and her husband, Tommy, of Holmdel, and Stephanie A. O’Neill of St. Lucie West, FL. Robert also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Jayme Barbato, Bridgette Piscicelli, Robert O’Neill, and Megan Sutherland, and seven great grandchildren, along with numerous cousins from Chicago, Illinois.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, August 22, 2022, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Tuesday morning, August 23, 2022, from 9:15 to 10:00 AM at Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey 07730. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday morning, August 23, 2022, at 10:30 AM at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel, NJ 07733. Entombment will follow at Holmdel Cemetery Mausoleum, 900 Holmdel Road, Holmdel, NJ 07733.
