Richard F. King, 86, of Union Beach, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 16, 2023. He is predeceased by his mother and father, Rose and James King, and brother, the Rev. James King, CSsR. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his children Theresa (Joe), Marianne (Rob), Dennis (Denise), Patrick (Donna), and Elizabeth (Ken); and his grandchildren Corinne, Lauren, Alyssa, Kathleen, Jacob, Charlie, Patrick, Erin, and Andrew.
Richard was born in Red Bank, NJ and was a graduate of Red Bank Catholic, Class of 1954. A throughline of his life was service to his community and faith. His early years as a sergeant in the National Guard were followed by over 40 years working at Construction Specialties Group. He volunteered in support of Holy Family Parish and its former school, serving as President of the Athletics Association, Treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 134, and President of the Holy Name Society. He was dedicated in his service to the Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council for over 20 years, holding positions that included Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, Color Corps Commander, Financial Secretary, and Faithful Comptroller.
Always most important to Richard was his love and devotion to his family. He met his wife Phyllis at the State Hospital at Marlboro where they both worked (he liked to emphasize they were not patients). They danced through 63 years of marriage, despite their impressive height difference, building a life together with five children and nine grandchildren.
Richard’s family will remember him for his strength and persistence; his constant encouragement and love; his quickness to offer his time, truck, tools, and skills to anyone in need; his sweet tooth; and his humor, including Donald Duck impressions. Most prominently, we will remember his voice, powerful and bellowing in any setting – from the musicals of his youth to the hymns that filled every church to his cherished birthday voicemails. His voice embodied his strength, love, and support of us, cheering us on, and transcending any crowd, space, or location. It will continue to reverberate in our hearts forever.
