Michael Long Sr. Obituary

Michael A. Long Sr., fondly known as “Andrew”,  81, of Lakewood, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.  Michael was born on June 23, 1941, in Pocomoke City, Maryland, where he grew up. He attended Worcester County Public Schools. After high school, Michael joined the United States Air Force where he served until he was honorably discharged. He furthered his education at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University). While attending college, he returned to Pocomoke City where he met his beloved wife, Edith.  Michael and Edith were married on January 26, 1964, and began their life together in Baltimore.  A few years later in 1969, they relocated to New Jersey, starting out in Keyport, before ultimately settling in Matawan, where they remained to raise their family.  Before his retirement, Michael worked in Administration for Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey, for many years.

Michael enjoyed building and could always be found tinkering with things around his home.  In his spare time, Michael enjoyed reading and spending time at the library.  He loved taking walks by the Keyport Waterfront, in addition to the Matawan Train Station, which was one of his favorite walking routes.  He also liked taking trips to Atlantic City with his family and friends.  Most of all, Michael adored his wife, children, and grandchildren.  He will be greatly missed and never forgotten by everyone who knew and loved him.

He was predeceased by his parents, Cicero Johnson and Edna Long and his eight dear siblings.  Michael is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 59 years, Edith (Wallop) Long, his loving children, Juanita Holden, Malinda “Peb” Lankford, Michael A. Long Jr. and his wife, Gina, Bryan V. Long and his wife, Nancy, and Erica Long along with his cherished grandchildren, Mia, Jordan, E’lani, Bryanna, Jenna, and Chase.  Michael also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Malinda Lankford and her husband Roger, Dorothy Marshall, Lowynda Holmes and her husband Adrian, Bernice Harris, his brother-in-law, Myer Taylor, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
