Michael Joseph Ennis, 79 of Old Bridge, New Jersey, passed away surrounded by loved ones on September 10, 2026, at Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, New Jersey.
Michael was Born on May 12, 1947, in Waukegan, Illinois, the only child of Joseph Ennis and Nell (Quandt) Ennis. He grew up in Jersey City and Union Beach, where he formed strong values, steady character, and a deep sense of loyalty to his community.
Michael was a proud graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, and he carried the lessons of discipline, faith, and service with him throughout his life. In his younger years, he also played semi-pro baseball, an experience that reflected both his competitive spirit and his enjoyment of teamwork and camaraderie.
After high school, Michael honorably and courageously served his country during the Vietnam War with the United States Marine Corps. He was a wounded combat veteran and received two Purple Hearts for his service and sacrifice. His military service was a source of great pride to him, and it stood as a testament to his bravery, resilience, and devotion to duty. He carried the experiences of his service with quiet strength, and it helped shape him into the proud and respected cop that he would later become.
Before his retirement in 1994, Michael served for many years as the Chief of Police for the Union Beach Police Department. He was proud of his service and the meaningful role he played in protecting others, and carried out his duties with honor, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to the safety of his community. After his retirement, he continued to exhibit these values as head of security at Freehold Raceway Mall.
Family was at the center of Michael’s world and what he considered his greatest accomplishment. He married his beloved wife Barbara in 1976, and together they made their home in Matawan/Old Bridge, where they raised their family and built lasting memories up until their final days with many parties, holiday gatherings, and various other celebrations.
Michael was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and relative whose love and support were felt deeply by those closest to him. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Ennis and Nell (Quandt) Ennis, and by his beloved wife, Barbara (Caiafa) Ennis. He is survived by his loving children, Michael Ennis and his long-time partner, Tina Elliott, Marc Ennis, and Rebecca Ennis. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Charlotte Leone and Benjamin Elliott, as well as many treasured brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Michael will be remembered for his kindness, his loyalty, and the strength of his character. He was a man who valued family, service, and friendship, and he lived his life with honor and heart. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched.
In respect of Michael’s wishes, he will be privately cremated. Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Friday morning, September 18, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey 07730.
