Maxine DiMaggio Obituary

Maxine L. DiMaggio, of Hellertown, PA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 14, 2024. She was born Maxine Loretta Zittel on April 9, 1943, in Oneida, New York to Arline (Powers) and Henry John Zittel. She grew up in Staten Island, NY where she met and married John B. DiMaggio. They settled in Plainfield, New Jersey where they raised their family. Maxine worked in Plainfield where she was a beloved educator until her retirement in 2005. Once retired, she lived in Hellertown, PA until her passing.

Maxine worked for the Plainfield School district for 26 years starting as a substitute teacher, then as the first Resource Room Teacher at Plainfield High School. She was a founding member and President of the Public Education Foundation. She served on the Plainfield Education Association as Team Captain, Grievance Chairperson and President. She enjoyed working with her students and was involved in many of their extra-curricular activities as Class Advisor coordinating fund raisers. In her spare time, she loved to travel, read, listen to jazz, and spend time in Stowe, Vermont and Naples, Florida with her family and friends. She also enjoyed attending the many sporting events and activities of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Lisa, Jennifer, and John (Kate) and her grandchildren Jessica D'Ottavio (partner Nicholas), Thomas John D'Ottavio (fiancé Natasha), and Morgan Ryan. She is also survived by her sister Carol Steele (Russell) and her former sons-in-law Tom D'Ottavio and Jack Ryan. Maxine was predeceased by her sister Cheryl Zittel.

Maxine was a devoted teacher, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, mother, and grandmother. She resonated with so many people from every walk of life and shared so much of her knowledge with everyone she met. She will be deeply missed, forever loved and never, ever forgotten. 

A Celebration of her Life will be held in late April with details forthcoming.
