Mary Donohue Obituary

Mary Theresa Donohue (nee Horan), 85, of Matawan, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 28, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.  Mary was born on October 18, 1936 in Jersey City, NJ to Rose and Bart Horan, and grew up in Brooklyn, NY. It was there she met lifelong friends and met the love her life, John “Jack” Donohue in 1957 while working for Grace Line on the Brooklyn waterfront.  They married on January 31, 1959, starting their lives in Brooklyn and moving to Hazlet, NJ in 1967.  Mary was a wonderful wife and mother who wanted to become more active in her community.  She started volunteering at her children’s school PTA and it was there made life-long friendships with extraordinary ladies.  Mary received her Associate Degree from Brookdale Community College while working in its accounts payable department.  She was the former President of the Hazlet Board of Education, serving multiple terms, and an active member of the Monmouth County Republican Party.  For more than thirty years Mary was a real estate Realtor/Broker in Monmouth County and took great pleasure finding homes for her many “nieces and nephews”.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, beloved husband Jack (2013) and her dear brother Bart (2021).  Mary is survived by her loving children John Donohue and his wife Pam of Toms River, Rosemary Thompson of Matawan, Christopher Donohue and his wife Joanie of Lanoka Harbor, and Nancy Donohue of Matawan.  “Nana” leaves behind her greatest legacy, grandchildren Kevin (Shannon), Matthew (Carolyn), Sean, Jaclyn (Reyer), Kathryn (James), Scott, Anthony, Colin, Kristen, Meghan, and Christopher James; as well as her darling new great granddaughter Madeline.  Mary is also survived by her dear sister Nancy, her adored brother and sister-in-law Tony Horan and Susan Trotter.  Mary was a wonderful aunt and grand aunt to many O’Shea, Murphy, and Donohue nieces and nephews.

It is Mary’s wish that she be celebrated in life and not grieved in death.  Please think of her fondly and toast her name when a reminder of her comes to mind.  She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
