Kevin Lavan Obituary

Kevin Martin Lavan, 78, of Hazlet, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday evening, July 31, 2022.  Kevin was a loving husband, father, fiancé, brother, grandfather, and friend to many.  He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Kevin was born on July 16, 1944, in Bayonne, New Jersey, where he grew up.  He was a graduate of Bayonne High School and continued his education at Jersey City State College.  Kevin was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served our country from 1962 to 1964.  After his time in the Army, Kevin pursued a life-long career as a longshoreman and was presently working as a Hiring Agent for Global Container Terminals in Bayonne.

In 1978, Kevin settled in Hazlet, to raise his young family. While living in Hazlet, Kevin was a dedicated public servant and longtime leader in his community.  From 2006 to 2010, he served as an elected member of the Township Committee, Deputy Mayor, and finally, mayor of Hazlet.  Kevin served on the Hazlet Township Planning Board, Zoning Board, Land Use Board, Recreation Commission, and the Bayshore Regional Sewerage Authority.  He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the longtime Chairman of the Holy Family Carnival, and a former President of the Holy Family Athletic Association.  He was also given the title of “Irish Person of the Year” for Monmouth County in 2013. 

He was predeceased by his parents, Owen, and Mary (Philbin) Lavan, his beloved wife, Helen “Cookie” Lavan, his daughter, Lisa Lavan, and his siblings, Tom Lavin, Eugene Lavan, and Michael Lavan.  Kevin is survived by his loving daughters, Michele Corcoran and her husband, Michael, of Robbinsville, and Karen Lavan Waltman and her husband, Adam, of Brambleton, Virginia, his adoring fiancé, Terry Moore, his dear siblings, Jack Lavin, Noreen Haveron, Brian Lavan, Julia Updike, and JMark Lavan, and his cherished grandchildren, Kevin Corcoran, Sam Waltman, Ellie Waltman, Lily Corcoran, and Cate Waltman.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, August 7, 2022, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM and Monday morning, August 8, 2022, from 8:45 to 9:30 AM at Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey 07730.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday morning, August 8, 2022, at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, 727 Highway 36, Union Beach, New Jersey 07735.  Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum, 360 Broadway, Keyport, New Jersey 07735.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in loving memory of Kevin Martin Lavan to one of the following: Affinity Health & Continuum Care Hospice Foundation 635 Duquesne Blvd. Suite 1, Brick, NJ 08723 or donate online at affinityhealthmanagement.com/donation.  MSK Cancer Center Office of Development, PO Box 27106 New York, New York 10087-7106 or donate online at https://giving.mskcc.org/give.
