Kathleen Marie Owens, just shy of 96, of Tinton Falls, New Jersey, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey. She was born Kathleen O’Hara on February 9, 1929, in Summit, New Jersey and grew up in Millburn. She graduated from Millburn High School and earned a scholarship for business school where she honed her skills as an executive secretary. She started her career working in NYC and then at Ciba Geigy in Summit, NJ.
She married Raymond Owens in 1954. After marriage, Kathleen and Ray settled in Hazlet where they bought their first and only home. They remained there to raise their six children. Kathleen became an integral part of the Hazlet tribe until her death.
We don’t know where she found the time in her busy schedule to volunteer as a den mother, girl scout leader, church volunteer and mentor. She was a ferocious reader, loved to sew, knit, garden, quilt, and bake. She made dessert everyday for her family and most days was asked “what’s for dessert?” instead of what’s for dinner. Many will remember her by the beautiful quilts she lovingly made for them.
Before her retirement, Kathleen worked many years as an Executive Secretary for six different Presidents at Brookdale Community College. While Kathleen wasn’t much of a drinker, she loved to socialize with her Brookdale friends at Friday evening Happy Hours. She cherished those friendships and maintained them throughout the years. She carried on the Happy Hour tradition when she moved to Seabrook Village and met many NEW friends in 2017.
She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Kathryn (Rooney) O’Hara, and her beloved husband, Raymond J. Owens, and her brothers, Peter O’Hara and Patrick C. O’Hara. Kathleen is survived by her loving children, Francis “Happy” Owens and his wife, Jane, of Shrewsbury, Brian Owens and his partner, Susan, of Houston, Texas, Elizabeth “Betsy” Ingram and her husband, John, of Phoenix, Arizona, Katharine Koehler and her husband, Rick, of Middletown, Ellen Deluccia and her husband, Bill, of Coral Springs, Florida, and Stephen Owens and his partner, Kim, of Middletown, and her dear siblings, Dorothy Brinker and her husband, Hank, and Thomas J. O’Hara III and his wife, Felice. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Jill Potter(Kevin), Drew Koehler(Erica), Bronwen Owens, Paige Koehler, Aidan Owens (Chloe), Kyra Deluccia, Erin Deluccia, Kayleigh Owens, Maggie Roy, and Amy Duncan, and her adored great grandchildren, Nava, Malia, Raymond, Artemis, Kristopher, Gavin, Jaiden, and Brenna.
