Joseph Hanily Obituary

Joseph Hanily, 78, affectionately known as “Anchor Joe,” of Union Beach, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 3, 1948, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Joe moved to Union Beach in 1957and later settled in Atlantic Highlands, where he met Ginny, in 1966.  The newlyweds lived above the Anchor Inn before returning to Atlantic Highlands. In 1974, Joe and his father‑in‑law built a home in Union Beach, conveniently located next door to the Anchor Inn — the bar-restaurant Joe’s father had purchased on September 27, 1957, and where Joe spent most of his life working before eventually becoming the owner.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Rose (Perrine) Hanily, and by his beloved wife of 56 years, Virginia “Ginny” (Cooper) Hanily, whom he married on August 27, 1966. He is survived by his brother Bill Hanily and his predeceased wife, Shirley Hanily, his sister Rose Maratta and Dr. Guy Maratta and loving children: Margaret Baird and her husband, Bob, of Union Beach; Elizabeth Duffy and her husband, Ray, of Waretown; Joseph Hanily and his wife, Laura, of Jackson; and Thomas Hanily and his wife, Eileen, of Howell. He also leaves his grandchildren Robert Baird III and his wife, Danielle, Megan Parker and her husband, Christopher, Joseph Hanily and his wife Stephanie, Connor Duffy and his fiancé Surbhi Chawla,  Kalynn Bohrer and her husband Kyle, Jenna Hanily, Ryan Baird and his fiancé Claire Gaston, Brendan Duffy, Sean Hanily, Kristina Hanily, Emma Duffy and Sara Hanily. Five great-grandchildren, Sophia and Isabella (Izzy) Baird, Cora Hanily, Ashton Parker and Callum Bohrer that affectionally called him Magic Pop-Pop.

Joe wore many hats throughout his life, including restaurateur, chef, mentor, and devoted family man. Early in his career, he worked on Wall Street before dedicating himself to the Anchor Inn.  In 2019, Joe and Ginny were honored as Union Beach Citizens of the Year in recognition of their lasting dedication and service to the community. Over the years, he passed along an unmatched work ethic to many of his employees. He also had a lifelong love of math, the stock market, fishing, music, magic tricks and making people laugh. Whether he was spending time on the water with family and friends, enjoying the Golden Oldies, or sharing one of his trademark jokes, Joe had a special way of bringing joy to those around him. Above all, his greatest pride was his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
