Joseph Assini, 66, of Greenwood, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at his home with his loving wife by his side on Friday, May 14, 2021. Joe was born on March 19, 1955 in Brooklyn, New York, where he grew up. Joe had a strong passion for helping people which led him to the medical profession. In 1983, he received his medical degree from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. During his time in college, he met Loretta Wakie. The two fell in love and were married on April 4, 1981. They initially lived in Staten Island before starting their family and settling in Aberdeen, New Jersey. During their time in Aberdeen, Joe ran his own podiatry practice in Staten Island and Brooklyn while the pair raised their three beautiful children Theresa, Christina, and Joseph. In 2012, after 25 years in Aberdeen and their children grown, the couple chose to relocate to Greenwood, Mississippi to pursue a new work opportunity and be closer to Joe’s sister who had relocated there previously. In Greenwood, Joe became an extremely active member of the community. He was known by many as Doctor Assini, where he worked as a podiatrist at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
When Joe was not working, his favorite place to unwind and relax was Aruba. Every July for almost 40 years Joe would travel to Aruba with his family creating precious memories with his wife, children, and eventually grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Pa”. Family was the most important thing to Joe. Every Christmas, Joe would love to cook his famous fish sauce for Christmas Eve dinner. Joe also enjoyed playing golf and bowling. Joe was a big sports fan and routed for all teams New York, but none more than his beloved New York Jets.
Religion also played an important role throughout Joe’s life, and he was thankful that he was able to dedicate more time to God and the church after moving to Mississippi. Joe dedicated his life to helping others, raising a wonderful family, and being a good man. Everyone that met Joe, loved him and knew him to be a generous and kind.
Joe was predeceased by his parents Frank and Marie Assini. He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years Loretta Assini, his children Theresa Murphy and her husband Chris, Christina Sturchio and her husband Dan, and Joe Assini and his wife Lindsay, his 5 grandchildren; Alex, James, Serena, Danny, and Ellie, his siblings Joanne, Barbara, and Frank, and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Joe will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
