John (“Jack”) the son of Harvey and Marion Coats, joined two older brothers, Bob (deceased) and Jim and his wife Violet. He grew up in Westfield, New Jersey, graduated from Westfield High School and went to Coe College in Cedar Rapids in Iowa. John returned to the Northeast after graduating and started working at MetLife in New York City in the claims division where he met his wife Barbara Driscol who also worked there. They were married in 1975. They lived in New Jersey, later moving to Tampa Florida when MetLife opened a Tampa office for the claims division. They later moved back to New Jersey, living in New Jersey where Barbara grew up.
Both John and Barbara enjoyed traveling especially to Europe and National Parks in the United States. Jack enjoyed writing up their adventures to share, which were very engaging and interesting itineraries.
He had various health challenges but met them with courage. His involvement as a volunteer at Saint Vincent-de-Paul Society and with Saint Michael’s Parish in Long Branch continues to be a source of enjoyment and comfort even to the end of his life at Complete Care at Monmouth where he passed away.
The family wishes to thank Mary Jensen of Saint Michael’s Parish for her faithful help and assistance, especially during Jack’s last years. She was instrumental in his comfort and care.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory to Saint Vincent-de-Paul Society, Saint Michael’s Church, 800 Ocean Avenue North, Long Branch, New Jersey 07740 would be greatly appreciated.
In respect of John’s wishes, he will be privately cremated. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, March 13th, 2026 at Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 800 Ocean Ave., Long Branch, New Jersey 07740. Interment of cremains will follow at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport, New Jersey. For more information, directions or to send condolences, please visit www.shorepointfh.com.
