John "Doc" J Dougherty

John “Doc” J. Dougherty, known lovingly to family and friends as “Doc,” passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on, September 9, 2026, at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. He was 66 years old.

Born on August 10, 1960, in Jersey City, New Jersey, he was the son of the late John J. and Gladys (Vottler) Dougherty. Doc was raised in Jersey City and later moved to the Bayshore area in 1977, where he built a life marked by devotion, hard work, and deep family ties. Those who knew him will remember him as a loving, kind, and handy man who was always ready to help.

Doc met the love of his life, Kathleen, and the two were united in marriage on March 14, 1997. Together they shared 29 wonderful years of marriage and raised their family in Hazlet/Middletown area. Their home was filled with love, laughter, and the steady presence of a husband and father who took great pride in his family. Above all else, Doc treasured the time he spent with Kathleen, his children, and especially his grandson, Levi, who was truly the light of his life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen (Garvin) Dougherty; his cherished children, Donna Dougherty and her partner Chris Shaver, John Dougherty and his wife, Amanda Stokes, Kylie Hart and her husband Justin, and Logan Dougherty; his adoring grandson, Levi John Hart; and his caring siblings, Debra Cassens and her husband Butch, and Donna Bach. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, John J. and Gladys (Vottler) Dougherty, as well as his dear siblings, Stephen Dougherty and Cathy Lee Dougherty. Also surving by his nieces, nephews and extended family. His family was the center of his world, and the bond they shared will remain a lasting source of comfort and strength.

Doc retired after many dedicated years working as a union floor layer for Local 2287 in New York City. He took great pride in his work and was respected for his strong work ethic, reliability, and skill. His hands were always busy, whether he was on the job, helping around the house, or lending a hand to someone in need. He earned the admiration of those around him through his steady presence and his willingness to do whatever was necessary to care for the people he loved.

In his free time, Doc enjoyed spending time at the gym, going to Shop-Rite, cooking, and being “Mr. Fix it.” He found joy in the simple routines of daily life and in the satisfaction of making things better for others. He especially loved being with his wife and children, and the memories he made with his family will be cherished forever. One of the most treasured experiences of his life was the family trip to Alaska, a journey that will remain in their hearts as a lasting reminder of the joy they shared together.

He will be deeply missed, always loved and never forgotten. 

In respect of Doc’s wishes, he will be privately cremated.
