John P. Dorsi, 65, of Keyport, New Jersey, unexpectedly passed away late Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Spring Hills in Matawan. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.
John was born December 16, 1957, in Queens, New York and lived there until the early 1960s, when his family moved to Hazlet, New Jersey. He was a mischievous child, and later attended Raritan High School with the Class of '76… when he wasn’t skipping school with his pals.
John married the love of his life, Sharon, on May 28, 1983. He never stopped telling her, "Still love ya, honey!" which was a quote from their favorite comedy bit by Sam Kinison. They eventually settled in Keyport, New Jersey where they raised their family. John was kind, generous, and a devoted father, and as of a year ago, a proud grandfather. He taught his kids how to shoot hoops and how (not) to slide into home, took them to parks and to the movies, and shared endless history and music facts, culinary tips, and life lessons.
John was an award-winning chef, and had become the Food Service Director at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center while working for Sodexo USA, prior to his retirement in 2006. He was also a proud veteran of the United States Navy, having served on the USS Talbot from 1977-1981, and was awarded the Navy Expeditionary Medal Middle East. John later joined the VFW Post 4303 and American Legion Raritan Post 23. He held several positions with the latter organization, having twice been elected as Post Commander. He was also a member of their Board of Trustees, and the Hall and House Manager. Every Keyport St. Patrick's Day parade John made his famous corn beef at the Post to share with the town.
John became an avid walker to get fit. He could often be seen walking along the Keyport Waterfront or on the Henry Hudson Trail in neighboring towns. He also loved watching the New York Mets and Jets, and was convinced Aaron Rodgers would lead them to a Super Bowl this season. He was a huge Classic Rock music fan, and enjoyed karaoking a tune every now and again, and especially liked going to classic car shows and battle reenactments. Despite health challenges, John was a jokester who never lost his sense of humor, never complained, and kept fighting ‘til the end.
John is survived by his wife, Sharon (née Katcher), with whom he recently celebrated 40 years of marriage, his children, John Michael Dorsi and his wife Jeena Sheppard, of Mount Holly, Jenna Dorsi of Middletown, and Darlene Borodunovich and her husband Kyle Joseph, of Browns Mills, New Jersey, as well as twin granddaughters, Jane and Josephine Dorsi, his mother, Corrine Dorsi, and brothers, Frank Dorsi and husband Larry Halpern, Gary Dorsi and wife Donna, Richard Dorsi and wife Angela, and his sister, Cherie Quinn and husband John. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Ilene Katcher, his good buddy, Dave Pierce, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Frank Dorsi, his sisters, Patricia Trenét and Diane Dorsi, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gerald and Catherine Katcher, his sister-in-law, Eileen Katcher, and his brother-in-law, Alan Katcher, and his cherished granddog, Peppy. He will be deeply missed and always remembered by all who knew him.
