Joan “Joni” Squeo Stass, 70, of Oceanport, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2020 at Brighton Gardens in Middletown, New Jersey. She was born on February 24, 1950 in Jersey City, New Jersey, where she grew up and lived for most of her life. Joni enjoyed living by the water and spent many summers in Oceanport, New Jersey, where she resided full time upon her retirement.
Joni received her master’s degree from Kean University and worked for the Jersey City Board of Education as a teacher before becoming a social worker on the Child Study Team. During her education career, Joni was recognized as a Teacher of the Year, and was a 1987 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching.
Joni had a smile that could light up a room and was always fun to be around. She was extremely loving, warm, and outgoing. In her spare time, she loved to cook and travel the world.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Marie (Scerbo) Squeo, her husband, Karl Stass, and her brother-in-law, Frank Oliveira. Joni is survived by her dear sisters, Annette Gutch of Hazlet, and Marie Oliveira of Edison, her niece and nephews, Charles J. Gutch, Stephanie Oliveira, and Daniel Gutch, and her brother-in-law, Charles F. Gutch. Joni will be sadly missed and never forgotten.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey 07730. In respect of her family’s wishes, all services will be held privately. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at The Church of the Precious Blood in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey. Entombment will follow privately at Woodbine Cemetery and Mausoleum in Oceanport, New Jersey.
