It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Gerard Edward Carney on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 peacefully at home. He was surrounded by the love of the family he treasured so much.
Gerard (Jerry) was born on February 8, 1936 in Hoboken. He grew up in North Bergen and graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Union City. It was there that he met his future bride and love of his life, Rita Moran. They married in April 1958 and shared 62 wonderful years together. In 1967, they moved to Hazlet to raise their family. He was a devout Catholic and longtime parishioner of St. Benedict’s Church in Holmdel, where he volunteered at a variety of church activities over the years. Jerry was a member of the Naval Reserve, Knights of Columbus and retired from JP Morgan Chase. He enjoyed any time he was with his family. Whether it was a Sunday dinner, vacations in the Outer Banks, weekends on Long Beach Island, or watching his Yankees and Fighting Irish play, Jerry was the most content when with those he loved.
He was predeceased by his parents, Grace and Victor Carney, his sister, Jeanne McNierney, his son-in-law, Francis X. Journick, Jr., and his lifelong friend, Bob Scarrone.
Jerry is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Rita, his sons, Gerard Jr. and Timothy, daughters and sons-in-law, Patrice Journick, Kathy and Mike Matuszewski, Nancy and Jay Cody, and Tara and CJ Brown, and brother-in-law, John Moran. He was a proud Poppy to his 20 grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Francis, Jennifer, Matthew, Patrice, Taylor, Brian, Sarah, Maggie, Lauren, Julia, Shea, Anya, Aisling, Grace, Timothy, Patrick, Christopher, Julianna, and Olivia, and his great grandson, Connor, who will miss him dearly.
