Francis McGowan Obituary

Francis Patrick McGowan, aged 91, passed away on October 7, 2024, in Holmdel, NJ. Born on March 9, 1933, he led a distinguished life marked by his dedication to his family, country, and community.

Professionally, Frank was a respected attorney from 1963 until his retirement in 1995. He was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School and went on to earn both a Bachelor's and a Juris Doctor degree from St. John's University, laying the groundwork for his successful legal career.

Frank married the love of his life Terry in 1959 and together they had a romance of 53 years which included many adventures and laughs, along with a family of five children. 

Frank was a proud veteran of the Army, serving during the Korean War. His lifelong commitment to service and helping others were an integral part of who he was.  He coached youth sports, was dedicated to pro bono legal work throughout his career, served as Eucharistic minister, was part of the Civil Air Patrol, and kept a regular schedule of volunteer work at the local food bank and hospital well into his mid-eighty’s.

He was a devout and active member of the Catholic Church, most recently St. Benedict's.

Frank was a man of many interests, but none more important than his large family.  He had a special ability to engage with each family member on a personal level displaying a remarkable recall for the activities and interests of each.  His other interests included reading, attending sporting events, the theater and his love of New York City.

He is survived by his sister, Arleen McGowan; his children, Susan ( Pat) Eckenrode, John (Patti) McGowan, Robert (Nancy) McGowan, Stephen( Angela) McGowan, and Kathleen (David) Mackrell, his grandchildren Carissa (Dustin) Eckelman, Bryan Eckenrode, Courtney ( Joe) Racioppi, Jack McGowan, Carter McGowan, Sarah McGowan, Tommy McGowan  Katie McGowan,  Harrison McGowan, Mike McGowan, Emily Mackrell, Lauren McGowan, Grant McGowan, Danielle McGowan and two great grandchildren, Jake Eckelman and Nate Eckelman. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Theresa McGowan; and his parents, Rose and John McGowan.

Francis's legacy of service, devotion, and love will forever be cherished by those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers please make any offerings to the VA New Jersey Health Care System (VANJHCS), Lyons Campus at 151 Knollcroft Road, Lyons, NJ 07939.

Arrangements were entrusted to Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey.  In respect of Francis' wishes, he will be privately cremated and his remains will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Theresa, at Brigadier General William C.
