Francis Birney Jr.

Francis Birney Jr., 92, of Holmdel, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, March 6, 2023. Francis was born on May 8, 1930, in Dobbs Ferry, New York. He served his country honorably in the US Navy.  Francis met the love of his life Mary E. O’Gorman and they wed in 1959.  After marriage, he and his wife settled in Holmdel, New Jersey where together they raised their family.  Before his retirement in 1990, Francis worked as an Electronic Switching Engineer for New York Tel, New York City, New York. He was a devoted communicant of Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel, New Jersey. 

Francis enjoyed spending time with his family and making model planes.  Most of all he was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. 

He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Francis Sr. and Florence (Carole) Birney, a beloved daughter, Eileen Jane McGovern, a dear brother, Jerome Birney. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary E. (O’Gorman) Birney, caring sons, Francis Michael Birney and his wife Vivian of Kensington, Maryland, Kevin Patrick Birney and wife Mary of Magnolia, Delaware, a son in law, Sean McGovern, of Toms River, New Jersey his cherished grandchildren, Patrick Joseph Birney and his wife Megan, Ryan F. Birney and his wife Renee, Caitlin E. Cagwin and husband Evan, Michael J. Birney, Fiona McGovern, Niamh McGovern and Aileen McGovern, adored great grandchildren, Lily Birney, Henry Birney, Mila Birney and Kellan Birney, a dear sister, Marguerite Jones of Huntington, Long Island and many nieces and nephews and extended family.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, March 9, 2023, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and on Friday, March 10, 2023, from 8:45 to 9:30AM at Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey 07730. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM on Friday, March 10, 2023 at Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church, 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel, New Jersey  07733.  Entombment will follow at Holmdel Cemetery/Mausoleum 900 Holmdel Road, Holmdel, New Jersey.
