With deep love and gratitude to God for her life, we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth Herrera Gil, who went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on May 12, 2026, surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of her own home.
Elizabeth was a devoted Christian whose faith in God carried her throughout her life. She loved Papa Dios with all her heart and remained steadfast in her faith until the very end. Her family rejoices in the peace with which she entered eternal life.
Born on June 11, 1934 in Colombia, South America, Elizabeth immigrated to the United States in 1968 with her husband and five children in search of new opportunities and a better future for her family. She deeply loved this country and was profoundly grateful for the blessings and opportunities America provided.
She made her home in Leonardo, New Jersey, a place she cherished deeply throughout her life. She especially loved the Jersey Shore and the familiar scent of the sea carried on the coastal winds — a simple but lasting joy that always brought her peace, comfort, and happiness.
As children, our home was filled with music, one of the great loves of her life. She especially treasured Boleros and Latin American romantic music, whose melodies and lyrics connected her to her roots and stirred her soul. Yet her love of music knew no boundaries — she delighted equally in soft rock and hard rock, embracing every song and sound that brought energy, emotion, and life into her home.
Music brought her immense joy, and that joy became contagious to her children and family. Because of her, music became woven into the fabric of our lives, shaping memories, celebrations, and moments both ordinary and extraordinary. The songs she loved will forever echo in our hearts, keeping her spirit, warmth, and love alive in our memories for generations to come.
Her family remains especially grateful that her mind stayed remarkably sharp and clear right up until the end. In her final weeks, she was present with those she loved most, sharing memories, faith, and love in her final days.
Elizabeth was a loving wife and mother. She will be remembered for her strength, courage, unwavering faith, love of family, and grateful spirit. Though her absence leaves a deep sorrow in the hearts of her children, we take comfort in God’s promise of eternal life and in knowing she now rests peacefully in the presence of our Savior.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents, Gilberto (Gil) and Enriqueta (Munoz), her beloved husband of 61 years, Luis H. Herrera and by her cherished son, John Jairo Herrera. She is survived by her loving children, Louis F. Herrera and his wife, Angela, Olga Herrera, Elizabeth Maratta, and Claudia Herrera-Gil. Elizabeth is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Michael Maratta, Krista Herrera, Isaac Benfield, and Gabriel Benfield.
A celebration of her life and faith will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026. The viewing is scheduled to take place from 11:45 AM to 12:45 PM at the Shore Point Funeral Home Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Route 35, Hazlet, NJ 07730. The burial ceremony will take place at 1:30 PM at Mt Olivet Cemetery, 100 Chapel Hill Road, Red Bank, NJ.
