Edward R. Spanier, 67, of Matawan, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026, in Holmdel, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on March 12, 1959, in Manhattan, Eddie was the son of Edward Spanier and Mary Gabelman. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Eddie carried the values of loyalty, strength, and dedication throughout his life. He later worked for FedEx as a carrier, where his strong work ethic and larger-than-life personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Of all the roles he held, the one he cherished most was being a stay-at-home dad — a role he embraced with endless love, humor, and pride.
Eddie lived life simply and fully. He loved spending time playing pool, fishing whenever he could, and relaxing in the sun with an ice-cold Budweiser in hand. More than anything, he loved his family deeply and treasured every moment spent with them.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Spanier; his children, David Tufano and his wife Michelle, Shawn Spanier and his wife Lauren, and Danielle Spanier and her fiancé Robert Nicoletti; and his cherished grandchildren, Juliette Tufano, Gianni Tufano, and Zac Spanier. Eddie also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss his humor, warmth, and unmistakable spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert “Butch” McKim; and his sisters, Patricia Antle, Veronica “Ronnie” Helmke, Kathleen “DeeDee” Freedy, and Laura Spanier.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Eddie’s life at a memorial service to be held at St. Andrew’s Church, 244 Avenel St, Avenel, NJ 07001, on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
“May there always be calm waters, good company, and a cold beer waiting for him.”
