David A. Carp, 79, of Hazlet, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by the love of his family, on June 5, 2024. Born on February 11, 1945, in the Bronx, New York, David was the cherished son of Hyman and Bea (Berkowitz) Carp. After residing in the Bronx and Manhattan, David settled in Staten Island in 1968 with his first wife, Elaina. On December 31, 1985, he married the love of his life, Florence Gebert, and together they embarked on a journey that led them to Hazlet, New Jersey, in August of 2002.
David served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He pursued his education with dedication, earning his bachelor’s degree from the City College of New York in Manhattan, where he also taught swimming at the YMCA. Later in life, he obtained his degree in Nursing from the College of Staten Island. David dedicated 20 years to nursing at various hospitals, with the majority of his career spent in the Emergency Room. His passion for teaching led him to spend 12 fulfilling years at Tottenville High School in Staten Island, where he taught nursing. David also served as a dedicated Advanced Cardio Instructor throughout the state of New Jersey for 22 years.
A proud lifetime member of the United States Marine Corps League and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Staten Island, David was a man of many talents and interests. He earned a double black belt in Judo and pursued hobbies such as shooting, hunting, fishing, and was a firearm enthusiast.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Hyman and Bea (Berkowitz) Carp. He is survived by his beloved wife, Florence (Gebert) Carp, his loving children, Nicole Baldino, son-in-law Frank Baldino of Rumson, New Jersey, Colleen Nichols and son-in-law Evan Nichols of Aberdeen, New Jersey, Kathleen Kelly of Keyport, New Jersey, and Bernard Kelly Jr. and daughter-in-law Valerie of Staten Island, New York. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Tyler Frank, Finn James, and Ryan Nicholas Baldino; Alexander and Amanda Grace Nichols; and Kaitlyn and Bernard III Kelly, David’s caring sister, Irene Rush, of Rhode Island and his niece, Lee Schwartz and nephew-in-law Chris Schwartz, also of Rhode Island. A devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, David will be greatly missed, always loved, and never forgotten.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., located at 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey. In accordance with David’s wishes, he will be privately cremated. A military honors ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 12, at 10am at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey, to honor his service and dedication to his country.
