Christian R. (Matawan) Witzig

Christian R. Witzig, 78 of Matawan, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2026, at Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, New Jersey.

Born on July 2, 1948, in Newark, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Christian and Constance (Read) Witzig. He was raised in Newark and spent his early years there before living in various places over the course of his life. Eventually, he settled in the Bayshore area, where he remained and became a familiar and respected member of the community.

Christian devoted much of his life to service, both to his country and to his community. He was a proud United States Marine Corps veteran and served honorably during the Vietnam War era. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to public safety as a Sergeant with the Aberdeen Township Police Department, where he served with dedication, professionalism, and integrity. His career reflected the same quiet strength and sense of duty that guided him throughout his life.

He was a man who appreciated simple pleasures and valued time spent doing the things he loved. In his spare time, Christian enjoyed riding his bicycle and motorcycle, and he found fellowship as a member of the Bayshore Wheelers, a New Jersey-based motorcycle club. While living in the Bayshore area, he was also a member of the Masons and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, organizations through which he formed lasting friendships and shared in the spirit of service and camaraderie.

Christian will be lovingly remembered by his son, Richard J. Witzig; his brother, Bruce Witzig; and his cherished niece and nephews, Cheri Ann Gates, Daniel Richard Witzig, and Stephen Barry Witzig. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Jennifer Witzig, and by his adoring parents, Christian and Constance (Read) Witzig.

Those who knew Christian will remember a man who carried himself with dignity and warmth. He was dependable, thoughtful, and kind, and he left a lasting impression on the people fortunate enough to know him. His life was marked by service, family, and friendship, and his memory will continue to be treasured by all who loved him.

In respect of Christian’s wishes, he will be privately cremated.  His cremated remains will be laid to rest at Brigadier General William C.
