Evelyn Petersen, 86, beloved mother, grandmother, G.G., aunt and friend, died at the home of her daughter in Hazlet from Pancreatic Cancer, on July 18, 2018. She taught her children, joy, that prayers are answered, hope, charity, faith, humor and love.
Evelyn was born in Bay Ridge Brooklyn of Norwegian heritage. As a young wife and mother of two children she moved to Staten Island where she raised her family. She was a member of Eltingville Lutheran Church and Nansen Lodge. She retired from the Registrar’s Office of Wagner College. Over the past 24 years, Evelyn split her time between her two residences: Manchester, New Jersey and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Up until this past summer, she very much enjoyed volunteering at The Treasure Chest, to benefit Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus.
Despite the tragic loss of two children, Evelyn chose to live her life with great faith and hope. She was especially fun-filled, and a wise and kind listener who truly inspired love in the hearts of people. She was close to God, thankful, and believed in the power of prayer.
She is predeceased by her parents Edith and Ben Thompsen, her husband, Fred, and tragically by two children, Kenneth and Paul. She is survived by, her children: Diane and Mark Bartley, David and Cindy Petersen, Ronald and Lisa Petersen, and Steven and Denise Petersen; her grandchildren: Jesse and Elizabeth Bartley, Sam Bartley, Linnea Petersen and David D’aranjo, Britta Petersen and Daniel Schowerer, Dana Petersen, Fred and Jessica Petersen, Ronald and Michael Petersen, Lisa and Kris Bertz, Steven and Christopher Petersen; her great-grandchildren: Makenna, Makaela and Brody Bertz, and Olivia and Jace Bartley; and adopted daughter, Lisa Bartley. A memorial service will be conducted at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Keyport, New Jersey, on Saturday, July 28 at 10:30 AM.
