     Sheldon Schechter, 84, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.    

     Sheldon was born on January 27, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York to Benjamin and Frieda Schechter. A Korean War veteran, he served in the United States Navy from 1952-1956 aboard various ships including the USS Leyte, an anti-submarine warfare carrier. From there, Sheldon served in the US Navy Reserves from 1956-1960. On December 24, 1956, Sheldon married Irene Semelmacher and together they moved to Rochester, New York, where Sheldon went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Printing at Rochester Institute of Technology in 1960. Moving to Sheepshead Bay, New York, he later worked as a salesman in the printing industry and held two printing patents. Sheldon and his family ultimately became residents of New Jersey.

    Sheldon is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene Schechter, 80, two sons, Bruce, 58, and wife, Kay Schechter of Somerset, New Jersey, and Andrew, 51, and wife, Tanya Schechter of Keyport, New Jersey. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Kristen, 31, and her husband, Preston France of Clinton, New Jersey, Matthew, 30, and his husband, Travis Schechter-Thurler of Bloomfield, New Jersey, Kaitlyn Schechter, 27, and her partner, Claire Sweeney of Jersey City, New Jersey, Michael and Katarina Schechter, 10, of Keyport, New Jersey.

    Arrangements were entrusted to the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, New Jersey 07730.  A private service will be held at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ on Monday, June 5, 2017.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, www.alzfdn.org, would be appreciated.For information, directions, or to send condolences to the family, please visit, www.shorepointfh.com.
